How I Manage My Eczema in the Heat: Tips for Staying Comfortable and Calm

When the temperatures rise, eczema can feel like an even bigger challenge. The heat and sweat often trigger flare-ups and irritation, making it harder to feel comfortable in your skin. Over the years, I’ve learned a few key tricks that really help me manage eczema during the hotter months — and I want to share them with you.

Stay Hydrated

Drinking plenty of water is my number one rule. While hydration doesn’t immediately change how my skin looks or feels, it’s essential to keep my body functioning well and helps me feel my best overall. So, I keep a water bottle close by and sip throughout the day.

Choose the Right Clothes

Fabric matters a lot when your skin is sensitive and easily irritated. I swear by linen and loose cotton clothes. They’re breathable and gentle, letting my skin breathe without rubbing or trapping sweat. I often go braless because bras tend to trap sweat and heat, which can trigger flare-ups — so comfort first!

Enjoy the Sun — Safely

My skin actually loves the sun, so I try to get outside as much as I can. But I’m careful to protect myself with sunscreen designed for sensitive skin. Two of my favourites are Altruis and Balmonds — both are gentle, effective, and fragrance-free.

Take Breaks and Cool Down

If I’m feeling overheated, I make sure to take breaks in a cool, shaded spot or lie down somewhere with a fan. It’s amazing how much just a few minutes of cooling off can help calm my body and skin. If your whole house feels warm, a fan can be a real lifesaver.

Switch to Light Creams

During summer, ointments just don’t cut it for me — they feel too heavy and I sweat them right off! Instead, I use lighter creams. Calma Ezzence is my absolute favourite because it’s soothing without being greasy, but when I’m on the NHS, I turn to Aproderm cream as a great alternative.
